Why more open space?

As one senior recently said, "Nothing wrong with more!".   And much of the land surrounding Hawi is privately owned.  As Kohala grows over the next couple of generations, our grandchildren and great grandchildren will thank us for thinking ahead and ensuring downtown Hawi has a community gathering area.   Most well planned towns have central plazas or parks and these parks not only add to the community's quality of life, but also help attenuate crime and provide recreaitonal space and areas for concerts and festivals that benefit downtown merchants.    The economic benefits of open space are well researched and documented.

Our Community Development Plan has a goal of raising 50% of our food in Kohala.  Our Farmers Market will need a permanent home and space to expand as part of this effort to increase community food security.
